Linux Mint 2.1 Review - as promised

Well, it didn't take me long to render a verdict on Linux Mint 2.1. Clem and the gang have definitely made some improvements since 2.0, and I was already pretty much sold on that one.

One of everyone's big "beefs" with 2.0 was that it was basically "Ubuntu with codecs". Not this time around. The community has helped Clem out quite a bit with artwork -- the splash screen and icon themes are specifically for Mint this time around, so you feel like you're using a unique distro and not a "dream install" of something else. But the newness isn't just limited to artwork. I wouldn't mind seeing a GRUB splash screen instead of the text that points to the Ubuntu kernel, but that's just one simple thing that by the time I'm at my desktop, I completely forget about it.

Installation, as usual, was a breeze. Since it's a Live CD, and it's Ubuntu-based, it's just a matter of booting off the disk, double-clicking the installer, and answering a few questions. I was even still talking to my girlfriend on Gaim as Mint was installing on my hard drive.

Once it was installed, I rebooted, but before I logged into GNOME, I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get out of X, typed sudo envy (which this time around, came pre-installed -- no need to download it separately!), which downloaded and installed my nvidia drivers for my GeForce 6600, and updated my xorg.conf for me. It's an amazing script. My only real complaint about envy is that since I have a widescreen monitor, I need to go back into xorg.conf and add "1680x1050" as a resolution, but, as widescreen becomes more and more the norm, this problem should resolve itself.

After this, I just typed startx and there I was, back at the blue GNOME desktop that I saw before I burned the new ISO. Color-wise, it's the same as 2.0 -- lots and lots of blue (which is odd, because I'd think a distro named "Mint" would have a lot of green in it).

I pulled up Synaptic and removed Xchat-gnome and replaced it with regular old Xchat, because since I use IRC as my primary means of communication with the rest of the Quakecon staff and community, I need all the features that seem to be stripped out of the GNOME-specific derivitave. Maybe they haven't, but, I'm just more familiar with Xchat, so that's what I like.

The only other programs I felt the need to install were Exaile for multimedia (I got hooked on it when someone posted it in the comments section of my Mint 2.0 review), K3b for CD/DVD burning (I know, I'm using GNOME, but once again, I just got familiar with it when I was using Mepis, and if Clem can put in Amarok, I can install K3b, right? :p) and FrostWire.

Remember that these aren't "necessary", they're just to satisfy my semi-self-indulgent desires.

So then, I started playing around with my newly-installed Operating System and all of its toys.

I popped in a CD full of music, and keeping with tradition, I once again pulled up My Name is Jonas by Weezer. Yes, this is my official "MP3-capability test song". As expected, it pulled up, played, and the sound quality was great.

I opened my DVD-ROM, popped in Return of the Jedi, and there was Totem, with full DVD support (including interactive menus). Even Windows doesn't make it that easy (if anything, it's harder in Windows than it is in Mint).

Firefox 2.0 came standard, which is great, and I wasn't having problems with most of the pages with streaming audio and video. Everything either worked through the Mplayer Plugin (which comes standard this time, one less thing to worry about), or popped up in Totem (much like Windows Media Player does). Flash came pre-installed, and worked really well (for a beta version). The only problem I ran into was trying to watch video on FoxNews.com -- I could hear it, but couldn't see it. I had this problem with Mint 2.0 as well.

In tinkering around, I saw mintWIFI [the link goes to the forum thread where all supported cards are listed]. Now, I don't have a wireless card in my PC, but I do in my laptop. Once I buy a new charger for it, I'll test it out and let you guys know how well it works, but basically it's a "home brew" app for Mint. It's a GUI-based ndiswrapper for wireless cards. If your card isn't immediately recognized by Linux, just click, point to a .inf file (from the manufacturer's disk or from downloading it online) and it will recognize it. Then, you set up your ESSID and everything else just the way you've always remembered it. And, for the non-Linux-savvy, it's all GUI-based. By the little I've read, there's not really a need to pull up a terminal and type anything. This is the first version of this, and if the Mint development community has proven anything between 2.0 and 2.1, they're dedicated to making more than "incremental updates" with their new versions, so mintWIFI will only get better and better as time goes by.

Again, I'm thoroughly impressed with this distro. It may infuriate some of the open-source purists, but, for people who just want their computer to work, it's getting closer and closer to being "the perfect distro".

I give this one a 9 out of 10. Highly recommended for new Linux converts, and people like me who are just too damn busy to tinker around with a thousand different things just to make your computer work.

I also was thrilled with this new version
Do you know if there is a similar program to install the ATI drivers?

i haven't heard of one. actually, i haven't used an ATI card in a LONG time, but I did read somewhere that ATI has done a better job with their latest version of the fglrx driver set. hell, i even think the installer is GUI-based now if i read correctly.

does it have winmodem support?

Why in the world would any self-respecting intelligent person go to fox for their news anyway?

because i go to every news site, not just one. that was just the one that i had problems with.

Ok I found this link to ATI installation
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Edgy_Installation_Guide

when I downloaded it, it was different from the actual posted version

I tried method 2 and my ATI card works now like a charm

Seem they did a clean up on the previous article (the one I used). As it worked, I did not try the newer/cleaned up one.

I have a copy of it, if interested

SuSE 10.0 was my first great experience with Linux on the desktop; I switched to Ubuntu after the devs broke package management in SuSE 10.1; finally switched to Mint in December. And Mint rocks! Beagle search works with no crashes; tested codecs in place; unusual logo art & default color scheme; built upon the very excellent Ubuntu. I agree with the reviewer: this distro rates at least a 9.

Some problem with the driver instalation for new devices

in case anyone was wondering, you can use EasyUbuntu or Automatix to easialy install the ATI drivers. They (usually) work fine on mint

Hello it seems to me a very pretty pagina and very entrenidad, has a good service for all those people that visits many congratulations by a good site
I invite all that interested person to know a little on my Web site
Condos In Costa Rica.
What is a condominium?
A condominium is a type ownership where certain parts of the property (the units) are owned by individuals, and certain parts (the common elements) are owned in common by the unit owners, all of whom are members of the condominium corporation (the organization responsible for the operation of the condominium). Ownership of a condominium means you own the specific unit plus individual interest in the common property. You have ownership over all space and improvements within the walls of your unit.
It is very important to know that you are buying the condominium building first and then the unit, so make sure you like the building and its financial position. I will assist you with this.
What are condo fees and are there property taxes for condos as well?
A condo fee is a fee that each owner is charged to cover the expenses of the complex and individual unit. For example, in a high-rise condominium, the condo fee includes all utilities, plus building insurance, management and reserve fund contributions. When the plan is registered at Land Titles for a condominium, a separate title is created for each unit. And shown on each title is the owners share in the common property, which is expressed in "unit factors". This "unit factor" can be based on the units proportionate square footage or the initial market price in comparison to the rest of the complex. A budget is prepared for a condominium complex, and the fees are allocated according to the unit factor of each condominium unit.
There are also property taxes for condominiums, and they are also calculated based on the unit factor.

A lot of people ask me how I like living in Costa Rica. My answer is, it was the best decision that I made in my life. I came to Costa Rica 7 years ago on a vacation and quickly fell in love with the beauty of the country and the hospitality of the people here. I couldn't wait to come back. I started coming here about 4 times per year and always had a great time and didn't want to leave. Two years ago, I decided to leave Arizona and come live in Paradise. I can not tell you how happy I am that I made that decision. Today, I wake up next to the ocean and run on the beach every morning. I eat the most delicious fruits, vegetables and fresh seafood. My stress levels are much lower than when I was living in the States and the potential here for investing, truly is unlimited. The best part of living here is showing our clients this country. I really don't feel like I have a job for the first time in my life. The joy I receive when I see the look on people's faces when they get into the warm water of the Pacific ocean is truly priceless. For those of you that have come and discovered paradise, you know what I am talking about. For those of you that are on the way, I can't wait to get you here. And to those who are thinking about Costa Rica, please do yourself a favor and come down. You will have the time of your life.

I’m writing this post from Linux Mint 2.1 (Bea), using DeepestSender (a firefox add-on). I will not be posting a screenshot (just yet) of Linux Mint on my desktop because the distro did not recognise my monitor and so I see a gross 800/600 screen, with really huge icons/text and no screen space to do anything.sportsbook I will have to fix it later, if I continue using Linux Mint, and then maybe I’ll have a screenshot. Right now, I’ll hide! (latest update: I finally fixed the configurations and here is the post with the screenshot)
